15th of AUGUST IN CRETE

One of the most important Bank Holidays in Greece is the 15th of August. Celebrating the grace of Virgin Mary, as well as the remebrance of an historical event, the sinking of the Battleship "Elli" in Tinos on the 15th of August 1940, by an Italian submarine.
This day for the whole country not only has religious and historical meaning, but for the modern Greeks marks the week of summer holidays.
